I have a little different twist on this, my Applecare agreement expires in May, but I will probably need assistance to upgrade to OS X 10.7 when MobileMe expires in June. I would suume that the software support would be free, but Apple has some strange policies and I have no idea how they would handle an out of warranty product with installation of their newly purchased software. Tim, the reason I am waiting is that I am replacing older software on a piecemeal basis since I can't afford to replace all of my older power PC software at once now that Rosetta is going away. I have bought about half of the new software I will need to be compatible with Lion, still have some left to buy; otherwise I would do the upgrade now. Each has been used and paid for itself in the first use. The Motherboard on my PowerBook G4 stopped seeing the second DRAM memory module, they replaced it, retail cost. I called Apple Care to help with some install issues. I spoke to 5 people, in 5 different departments.
Each person asked me the serial number of the product (claiming to pass it along to the next rep.). At the end, they couldn't resolve the issues and after some time, patience and effort, I found my issues while doing some research on the net. Conclusion: calling Apple Care is like calling dumb and dumber with please provide your serial number on auto repeat! Not saying it's not worth it to have but APPLE really needs to address their customer service process and educate their techs better.

The first time I bought it, I did not register it correctly online and it was all user error. I didn't realize this until I had to take in my iMac for some repairs. However, I was able to register it for a Macbook Air purchased outside of US, but by providing a US address. It would have cost me $185 In-store (that price is with Student discount) If you ever plan on reselling your macbook within 3 years of initial purchase, Applecare is essential. Most people will not buy used without Applecare AND if they do, yo will take a price hit. It's pricey, but worth the hassle should something go wrong.
